Bioventus Launches Next Generation of Exogen in Canada

Bioventus, a Smith & Nephew spinoff, has launched the next generation of its Exogen ultrasound bone healing system, which includes a new compliance feature and healing progression performance guarantee, in Canada.

Exogen is indicated for bone fracture healing. It uses low-intensity pulsed ultrasound intended to help stimulate the body’s natural healing process. According to the company, it has an 86 percent heal rate for fractures that have difficulty healing on their own, and with Exogen, fractures reportedly heal 38 percent faster than without.

The new version of Exogen introduces new compliance capabilities, such as a log and patient treatment history, to help physicians ensure that patients are appropriately using and benefiting from the device.

“The release of the new Exogen device is exciting news for those of us who treat fractures on a regular basis. This technology has become a very useful tool for fracture treatment,” said Paul Zalzal, M.D. assistant clinical professor at the McMaster University Ontario, Canada; and former chief of orthopaedic surgery at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Canada. “The new performance guarantee is unprecedented and provides reassurance that Bioventus stands behind its product.”

The new performance guarantee refunds out-of-pocket costs to Exogen patients who meet program requirements and who do not experience healing progression in their non-union fracture (skull and spine fractures excluded). It is a portable, lightweight device that features an ultrasound probe that patients place on their skin at the site of the bone break for 20 minutes a day. Patients can easily perform the treatment at home and Exogen has no known contraindications.

The new Exogen replaces the Exogen 4000+ model. The new device has a new color LCD screen, splash-proof casing, and sleeker, lightweight design. It is also designed to be more environmentally friendly, with a removable, rechargeable battery.
